The Academy of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Malaysia (AOEMM) extends its heartfelt congratulations to Professor Dr. Jayakumar A/L Gurusamy on his appointment as Vice Chancellor of Manipal University College Malaysia (MUCM), effective 1 April 2025.
A Leader in Occupational and Community Medicine

Professor Dr. Jayakumar brings to his new role a distinguished career spanning academia, industry, clinical practice, and public health leadership. He holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, and a Master of Medicine in Occupational Medicine from the National University of Singapore. His professional affiliations include Fellowships from the Academy of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Malaysia (FAOEMM), the Academy of Medicine Malaysia (FAMM), the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and the Faculty of Occupational Medicine of Ireland.
In addition to his academic and clinical roles, Professor Dr. Jayakumar is a Council Member of the Malaysian Medical Council, contributing to advancing medical standards and ethics in Malaysia.
Championing Occupational and Environmental Health
Professor Dr. Jayakumar has been an active member of AOEMM and the Malaysian Medical Association, serving on the Council in AOEMM and as Chairman of the Society of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Malaysian Medical Association. He is the founding member of the AOEMM. He has contributed to various initiatives to advance occupational and environmental medicine in Malaysia. His insights and leadership have been instrumental in shaping the direction of occupational and environmental health in Malaysia and the region.
Throughout his career, Professor Dr. Jayakumar has advocated for healthcare worker safety and occupational health education. Together with Prof Dr Retneswari Masilamani, he played a pivotal role in authoring the book Occupational Health for Health Care Professionals: Caring for the Carers, a crucial resource designed to equip healthcare providers with the knowledge to protect themselves in clinical settings.
A Vision for Excellence in Education and Healthcare
In his inaugural message, Professor Dr. Jayakumar affirmed his commitment to MUCM’s mission: “Global Leadership in Human Development; Excellence in Education and Healthcare.” His vision emphasises collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity—principles that align closely with the values of AOEMM and the broader occupational health community.
